Track, Baseball, Softball...Got It All This Week

It's another busy week for me and my sports coverage with The Daily Mail, as this week should provide coverage for fans of all spring sports.

In today's Daily Mail, click here to read my article on St. Albans hurdler/sprinter Anacia Hines. As a sophomore, Hines continues to rank among the state's elite in the 100-meter run, 200 and 100 hurdles, as she looks to qualify for the state meet at Wednesday's regionals.

Speaking of regionals, I'll have a Class AAA regional track championship preview for Wednesday's Daily Mail. I'll breakdown the top area athletes and teams competing for titles. I'll also focus on Hurricane seniors Emily and Natalie Schwendiman, twin sisters, running together in their final meets.

The Schwendimans will look to spur the sixth-ranked Hurricane girls toward a Region IV Championship, but will contend with Winfield, who ranks third in the state, according to www.runwv.com, and seventh-rated St. Albans.

On the boys side in Region IV, Cabell Midland, No. 2 in the state, is the favorite, though there will be plenty of other solid contenders, with Point Pleasant (fourth), Huntington (fifth) and Winfield (10th) each ranked in the top 10.

In boys Region III, No. 7 Greenbrier East and 10th-ranked George Washington are expected to battle for the team titles.

In girls Region III, no team rank among the state's top 10 as it seems it's a wide open race for the team championship.

In Thursday's paper, I'll have a combined Class A/AA regional track championship preview. I'll breakdown all the local athletes and teams competing for top spots in their respective races and regions.

The Poca boys squad, fresh from winning the Cardinal Conference Championship, is ranked seventh in AA and appears the favorite to win AA Region 4. Those competing for second will include Scott, Herbert Hoover and Wayne, among others.

On the girls side, Scott won the girls Cardinal Conference Championship and looks to have the inside track with no Region IV teams among the state's top 10.

In boys Class A, Region IV will produce one battle-tested team, with the state' top four teams all in the same region: Doddridge County (1), Williamstown (2), Buffalo (3) and Charleston Catholic (4). For good measure, Gilmer County is No. 7 and also in the region.

For the girls, Williamstown and Doddridge enter ranked 1-2, with Charleston Catholic fifth and Wahama ninth.

If track's not your thing, I'll be covering Logan baseball at St. Albans on Tuesday in Class AAA sectional action. The forecast isn't looking too good at this point. Really hoping the rain stays away so I can cover some baseball this week.

Finally, I'll be covering Ripley at South Charleston softball in Class AAA regional semifinals on Thursday. These two teams played a tough one earlier this season with SC prevailing 1-0. Will Ripley avenge the loss against perhaps the state's top pitcher in Alli Burdette? We shall see. Check Friday's Daily Mail for coverage on that game.

As you can see, there's a little bit of everything for all Kanawha Valley prep sports fans and followers. Be sure to check the Daily Mail each day for coverage. I'll do my best to post extra material here as frequently as I can, too.
