In a previous post, I did my best to breakdown the Class AAA Region III track championship meet, and now, I'll try to give a run-down on AAA Region IV, as best I can. To read my Daily Mail article on today's AAA region championships, click here.
The Cabell Midland boys enter ranked second in the state, according to www.runwv.com while Point Pleasant (fourth), Huntington (fifth) and Winfield 10th will also be among top contenders.
Boys
100: Marquez Griffin (Point Pleasant), Bryce Jones (Huntington), Steven Handley (Hurricane) and Ken Haynes (South Charleston) all rank in the state's top 10 in a deep field for this event.
200: Winfield's John Hathaway ranks fifth in the state. Handley and Huntington's Fred Hightower also rank in the top 10.
400: Spring Valley's Jacob Kilgore ranks third in the state, while the Point Pleasant duo of Zach Canterbury and Caleb Riffle rank four-five.
800: Cabell Midland dominates the middle distance and long distance hat. Knights Jacob Burcham, Brian Lawhon and Mason Dino rank 1-2-3 in the state. Riffle, Kilgore and Winfield's Preston Sheldon also rank in the top 10.
1600: Burcham will undoubtedly win as the state's No. 1, with Lawhon also in the top 10.
3200: Burcham again is the state's No. 1 and should face little competition for the top spot. St. Albans' Jake Henley and Huntington's Jack McGee also rank in the top 10.
110H: Midland's Nate Moore and Niles Dailey will battle the state's second-ranked Ryan Gatrell, of Huntington.
300H: Moore and Dailey both rank in the top 10.
4x100: Point Pleasant ranks second in the state, Winfield fifth, Huntington 10th.
4x200: Winfield fourth, Huntington fifth, Point Pleasant ninth.
4x400: Huntington fourth, Huntington sixth, Point Pleasant seventh.
4x800: Midland second, Point Pleasant fourth, Winfield fifth.
Shuttle hurdles: Huntington third, Point Pleasant sixth, Midland seventh, Ripley 10th
High jump: Winfield's Christian Smith and Gatrell, of Huntington, will be among top contenders.
Pole vault: Winfield's Chris Cochran and Hurricane's Chantz Rankin rank two-three in the state. Huntington's Loy McGuire, and Smith, of Winfield, also rank in the top 10.
Long jump: Point Pleasant's Brady Reymond ranks third in the state, with Huntington's Ryan McGuffin fourth.
Shot put: St. Albans' Jacob Lomax ranks ninth in the state and looks to be the man to beat.
Discus: Lomax and teammate Travis Vickers each rank in the top 10, as does Cody Mitchell of Point Pleasant.
Girls
Winfield enters ranked third in the state, with Hurricane sixth and St. Albans tied for seventh.
100 & 200: Anacia Hines, of St. Albans, will battle Emily Cole and Anika Shah, both of Winfield, in both events. Jakeya Perrin, of Cabell Midland, ranks in the top 10 for the 200, as does Safiyyah Mitchell of Huntington.
400: Perrin and Winfield's Barkely Castro look to be the favorites.
800: Castro ranks first in the state, with Hurricane's Emily Schwendiman fifth and Point Pleasant's Andrea Porter seventh. Natalie Schwendiman, of Hurricane, will also contend.
1600: Emily Schwendiman, Porter and Hurricane's Joie Johnston all rank in the top 10. Natalie Schwendiman will also contend.
3200: Hurricane's Emily Schwendiman and Johnston will be the favorites.
100H: Hines ranks as the region's top hurdler, with Makenzi Niebergall and Haley Hall, both of Midland, in the state's top 10, too.
300H: Winfield's Josee Erlandson and Makenzie Arthur each rank in the top 10, as well as Audrey Barber of Hurricane.
4x100: Winfield ranks first in the state.
4x200: Winfield ranks first in the state, Midland ninth, Point Pleasant 10th.
4x400: Winfield ranks second, Midland seventh
4x800: Hurricane third, Winfield sixth, Midland ninth.
Shuttle hurdles: Midland second, Huntington fourth, Winfield fifth, Point Pleasant ninth.
High jump: Midland's Mackenzie Cassidy ranks ninth in the state.
Pole vault: Winfield's Allie Perry ranks third in the state and looks to be the favorite. She'll be challenged by Lauren London, of Hurricane.
Long jump: Cole, of Winfield, ranks ninth in the state.
Shot put: Hurricane's Abby Watson ranks ninth.
Discus: Watson ranks third and should be the favorite to win.
