Track regional championships continue with Class A action today. For Kanawha Valley teams, athletes will compete at the Region 4 meet in Parkersburg today. For my preview in the The Daily Mail, click here.
Below, I'll do my best to give an event-by-event breakdown of the area's top contenders. This is determined upon the best performances rankings at www.runwv.com and my interviews with Buffalo's Richie Wyant and Charleston Catholic's Scott Welch.
Boys
Doddridge County and Williamstown enter as the state's No. 1 and No. 2 teams as they seem to be every season. Buffalo ranks third, with Catholic fourth, and Gilmer County is seventh, so Region 4 features five of the state's top 10 Class A boys teams.
100: Buffalo's Jordan Tucker ranks ninth in the state.
200: Catholic's Sam Revercomb ranks second-best in the state, though Irish coach Scott Welch said it's unsure if Revercomb will race as he currently has a hamstring injury.
400: Dylan Rich, of Buffalo, ranks sixth in the state.
800: Rich ranks first in the state with what I believe is the fastest 800 time for any athlete among all classes in this event. Previously, this season, Rich defeated Cabell Midland's Jacob Burcham, a heralded and much-respected distance runner. Also, Rich is the defending state champ in this event. Bison teammate Isaiah Robinson and Charleston Catholic's Marcus Black and Caden McClanahan also rank in the state's top 10.
1600: Rich (first), Black (fourth) and Buffalo's Hayden Harrison each rank in the top 10. Rich is expected to win with relative ease as he is the defending state champ in this event.
3200: Rich and Black rank first and third in the state respectively, with Harrison sixth.
110H: Buffalo's Gabe Garrison and Cody Sheppard each rank in the top 10.
300H: Phillip Mallory, of Catholic, looks to be the Valley's top threat as he ranks fourth in the state.
4x100: No Kanawha Valley teams rank in the state's top 10.
4x200: Catholic ranks second.
4x400: Catholic ranks second, Buffalo sixth.
4x800: Buffalo ranks first, Catholic third.
Shuttle hurdles: Buffalo seventh.
High jump: No Kanawha Valley athletes rank in the state's top 10.
Pole vault: Catholic teammates Mallory and Keaton Snodgrass are tied for eighth-best in the state.
Long jump, shot put, discus: No Kanawha Valley athletes rank in the state's top 10.
Girls
Williamstown and Doddridge rank 1-2, with Catholic fifth and Wahama ninth.
100, 200 & 400: While no Kanawha Valley athletes rank among the state's top 10, Buffalo's Brianne Cantley should be the area's top sprinting threat as she sits just outside the rankings in several sprint events.
800 & 1600: Quincy McKown and Peyton Keener, both of Charleston Catholic, rank in the state's top 10 in both events. Irish teammate Payton Mullen ranks top 10 in the 1600.
100H & 300H: No Kanawha Valley athletes rank among the state's top 10, though Buffalo's Rachel Martin should contend if healthy as she overcomes concussion symptoms, according to Bison coach Richie Wyant.
4x100: Catholic sixth, Buffalo eighth.
4x200: Catholic fourth, Buffalo 10th.
4x400: Catholic seventh.
4x800: Catholic second.
Shuttle hurdles: Buffalo ninth.
High jump: No Kanawha Valley athletes rank among the state's top 10.
Pole vault: Catholic's Catherine Casingal is ranked third and should advance with a solid showing. Teammate Sydney Taylor, ranked sixth, will also contend.
Long jump: No Kanawha Valley athletes rank among the state's top 10.
Shot put & discus: Catholic's Gina Marks ranks eighth in the shot. She could also contend in the discus, though is unranked.
Several area teams will also compete in today's Class A Region 3 meet, to be held at the University of Charleston's Laidley Field.
Fayetteville's Jonathan Gore ranks in the top 10 for the 100, 200 and long jump. Ethan Barker, of Midland Trail, ranks in the top 10 for the 200.
Greenbrier West's Colby Ennis is top 10 for the 110H. Teammate Cory Cox ranks top 10 for high jump.
In relays, Greenbrier West ranks 10th in the 4x100 and second in shuttle hurdles. Midland Trail is eight in the 4x200. Sherman is ninth in the 4x800.
For girls Region 3, Abigale Buchan, of Valley Fayette, ranks top 10 in the 100, 200 and high jump. Sherman's Amelia Sebok is top 10 for the 1600 and 3200.
