Class A Track & Field State Meet Preview

The West Virginia High School Track & Field State Meet will be held Friday and Saturday at the University of Charleston's Laidley Field. For my Daily Mail preview article on the area's top Class A athletes and teams attending, click here.

Below, I'll do my best to give a breakdown of all the area's top Class A athletes and teams that will be in action.

Boys

Defending champion Doddridge County looks to be the favorite once again as ranked No. 1 by www.runwv.com. Defending runner-up Williamstown ranks No. 2. Buffalo ranks slightly behind third-rated Tyler Consolidated, with fellow local team Charleston Catholic listed sixth. With a stellar round of performances, Buffalo may sneak past Williamstown, but figures to be battling Tyler Consolidated for the third spot. Catholic will aim for a top five spot as its goal.

100: Jonathan Gore, of Fayetteville, ranks highest among area boys in fifth place. Jordan Tucker won the event at the Region 4 championship and ranks 10th in the state. Catholic's Ryan Edwards and Tracey Lovins, of Fayetteville, round out the competing locals.

200: Charleston Catholic's Sam Revercomb ranks second in the state, though a hamstring injury prevented him from qualifying as he did not race at the regional championship. That makes fifth-ranked Gore the top local in the event, with Tucker (Buffalo) and Lovins (Fayetteville) also competing.

400: Buffalo's Dylan Rich posted the season's sixth-best time, but will not race in the event, opting to run in his longer signature events and 4x800 relay. Bison teammate Isaiah Robinson looks to be the top local runner in the event with Rich's absence. Lovins will also compete.

800: Rich is the defending champ and missed the state record by .47 seconds last season. He beat Cabell Midland's Jacob Burcham in this event in Rich's first meet of the 2013 season. It's not expected anyone will catch Rich. Robinson ranks third in the state and will look to score for Buffalo, too.

1600: Rich broke the state record in this event en route to winning at last year's state meet. He's got the fastest time in the state for Class A by 12 seconds and the event should be his to lose. Charleston Catholic's Caden McClanahan and Marcus Black rank in the state's top five and will look to post solid times for the Irish as well.

3200: Rich ranks No. 1 in the two-mile and should be the favorite to win. Teammate Hayden Harrison ranks sixth. Black, of Charleston Catholic, will also compete among the state's best looking for All-State status. Sherman's Zackary Cannady and Thomas Bowles will look to score.

110H: Buffalo's Gabe Garrison ranks seventh in the state and will lead the local efforts. Bison teammate Cody Sheppard will provide some depth too for Buffalo.

300H: Phillip Mallory, of Catholic, ranks fifth in the state as the top local. Fayetteville's Timothy Holster will also compete.

4x100: No local teams rank among the state's top 10. Charleston Catholic, Valley Fayette and Buffalo will all compete.

4x200: Catholic ranks second in the state and will be a top contender to win pending Revercomb's participation. Even without Revercomb, the Irish will be favorites to score and possibly win. Valley Fayette and Buffalo will also compete.

4x400: Catholic ranks third, Buffalo sixth. Sherman will also compete.

4x800: Buffalo is the two-time defending champ in this event and ranks No. 1 in the state. Catholic ranks fourth in the state, Sherman 10th.

Shuttle hurdles: Buffalo ranks eighth in the state. Sherman will also compete.

High jump, long jump, pole vault, shot put & discus: Gore ranks third in the state for long jump. No other locals competing in any other field event.

Girls

In reverse of the boys standings, Williamstown is No. 1 and the defending champion, with defending runner-up Doddridge currently listed second. Like its counterpart boys team, the fifth-ranked Irish will look for a top-five finish, but have much work to accomplish with teams like Clay-Battelle and Tucker County ahead of Catholic and St. Marys and Wheeling Central not far behind.

100: Valley Fayette's Abigale Buchan ranks eighth in the state. Brianne Cantley, a Buffalo sophomore, will look to contend to score. Catherine Casingal, of Catholic, will compete, too, as will Sherman's Adr'ona Castle.

200: Buchan ranks ninth as the top local competing. Cantley and Castle will also race.

400: Lauren Pleva, of Valley Fayette, represents the lone local competing in this event.

800 & 1600: Charleston Catholic's Payton Mullen, Peyton Keener and Quincy McKown each rank in the state's top 10 for both events. They're serious threats to score well in both events. In addition, Amelia Sebok and Samantha Garretson, both of Sherman, will race in both events too and look to grab some points.

3200: Catholic's Annie Crockett is the top local contender with Sebok and Garretson also competing.

100H & 300H: Sherman's Allison Christian, in the 300s, represents the lone local competing.

4x100: Catholic ranks fourth, with Buffalo eighth.

4x200: Catholic ranks fifth. Buffalo will also compete.

4x400: Catholic ranks fifth. Fayetteville and Sherman will also compete.

4x800: Catholic ranks second, less than three-tenths of a second behind No. 1 Williamstown. Sherman will also compete.

Shuttle hurdles: Sherman lists as the lone local relay competing.

High jump: Buchan and Emily Smallman, both of Valley Fayette, will look to represent well as the lone locals competing. Buchan ranks seventh-best in the state.

Pole vault: Casingal, of Catholic, ranks tied for third in the state, and will look to provide some solid points for the Irish.

Long jump: Buchan represents the lone local competing.

Shot put & discus: Gina Marks, of Catholic, ranks ninth in the state in shot. No locals will compete in the discus.
