OWENSBORO -- Last week's lack of practice due to the Jan. 26-28 ice storms disrupted schedules for swimmers from Madisonville-North Hopkins, but not their will to succeed in Saturday's Region 1 swim meet at the Health Park.
Lady Maroon Ellen Whittington dominated the competition by winning two individual events and participating on two other first-place relay teams for North.
Whittington's performance propelled the North girls to second place while overall, the school finished in third.
For Whittington's effort, coaches from the meet's participating schools voted her the girls' Most Outstanding Competitor.
"She was responsible for 96 points on our team as an individual and as part of a relay," North coach Jason Clark said. "She had a direct hand in 96 points and if that's not an outstanding competitor, then I guess I don't know what one is. Ellen had a terrific meet."
Whittington won her first even in the 50-yard freestyle (:25.16), then defeated all swimmers in the 100 free (:55.48).
Whittington's teammate Mary Katherine Kington also earned an automatic qualification when she captured first place in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.18).

Kington, a senior, also swam on the Lady Maroons' two winning relay teams.
In addition to Kington and Whittington, Rachel Dorris and Carli Whittington joined forces for the first-place 200-yard medley relay team (1:55.15).
Later, Kington and the Whittington pair won the 200 free (1:44.19) with the aid of Kathleen Ewing.
Individually, Kington and Carli Whittington each captured lone third-place honors. Kington's third-place occurred in the 200-yard individual medley (2:20.11) and Carli's came in the 100 free (:56.90).
By finishing in third, the duo narrowly missed automatic qualification, but still have hopes for reaching the state meet.
After the top-two racers from each event, the top 14 times are taken from across the state's five regions to determine who will advance.
"Carli and her 100 freestyle and Mary Katherine and her 200 IM are sitting pretty because they both have third-place finishes and those times are pretty fast comparatively across the state," Clark said. "I'm pretty confident they are going to qualify as an at-large bid."
The North boys also provided a solid effort by scoring points in each of the three relay races.
Brad Hagstrom, John Hilker, Ches Hill and Zach Yonts teamed up to take 10th place in the 200 medley relay (1:57.58). The Maroons finished seventh in the 200 free relay (1:41.29) and 10th in the 400 free relay (4:10.52).
Individually, Hilker posted the best performance with his fifth place in the 500 free (5:22.92). Hilker also took seventh in the 100 back (1:02.88).
Yonts captured points in two separate races as well. Yonts finished sixth in the 100 fly (:57.84) and 11th in the 50 free (:24.62).
Although none of the boys earned automatic state qualification, Clark said Hilker and Yonts each have a shot to make the trip to the state meet.
"We also have a good shot at Zach Yonts and John Hilker getting in as an at-large bid," he said. "We're going to keep our fingers crossed and check the state Web site."
North will continue to practice each day in preparation for the state meet on Friday and Saturday to be held at Ralph Wright Natatorium at the University of Louisville. The team will leave Thursday for warm-ups at the pool and the girls will swim Friday morning.
Official results for Hopkins County Central were not available at the time of press. Check Tuesday's edition of The Messenger for information regarding the Storm's performance.
