OWENSBORO -- After practicing for just the first time in a week on Monday, the Madisonville-North Hopkins dive team took to the pool on Tuesday evening and posted a trio of top-10 finishes in the Region One Diving Championship at the Owensboro Medical Health System HealthPark.

Each of North's three participants finished in the top eight, led by Lady Maroon Leah Crawford's personal best. Crawford, a seventh grader, ended the meet with 316 points.

Juniors Maarten Adams (seventh, 260) and Jordan Wilson (eighth, 239) also posted solid efforts despite the lack of practice due to last week's ice storm.

"They did very good this year," dive coach Eric Wilson said. "I'm very proud of them. All of them are first-year divers and each competed excellently."

The North squad returned to the pool just 24 hours before the regional after a forced six-day break due to power outages. At Monday's practice, the divers tuned up each of their various dives and worked on a few new ones.

During the regular season, North typically participated in six-dive meets, but the regional required 11, Wilson said.

"We haven't been on the board in over a week and it's kind of rough to get used to it the day before regionals," Jordan Wilson said. "Overall, we had some good warm-ups.

"Me and Maarten both had to learn one or two new things the day before regionals to have 11 good dives. Me and him nailed a few things we haven't even tried before, so I felt happy about that."

Adams said putting together dives he had just learned the day before was quite difficult.

"It was nerve wracking and I did my best," he said.

For Adams, the meet meant gaining a little bit of normal routine back as well as an opportunity to dive.

"I haven't had power since the whole (storm) started and jumping right from that into the competition was a real change of pace," he said.

The Maroon swim team will compete in the swimming portion of regionals on Friday and Saturday at the HealthPark.
