Former North swimmers help Transy win

The Transylvania University men's swimming team downed the Asbury College Eagles 124-99 on Friday for the Pioneers' third-consecutive win, led by a crew of four former Madisonville-North Hopkins swimmers.

Both Joseph Porter and Yunan Yang collected single second-place finishes while Daniel and Stephen Porter also tallied points to propel Transylvania to victory.

Joseph participated on the second-place 400-yard freestyle relay team (3:28.75) and Yang took second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:24.39).

Stephen's squad finished third in the 400-yard free relay (3:33.97). Daniel and Yang swam together on another team, but their crew was disqualified.

Joining Yang in the 200-yard breast, Daniel earned a single point by finishing fifth (2:32.75).

Yang and Daniel teamed up to swim on a fourth-place 400-yard medley relay team as well.

Joseph earned two points with his fourth-place finish in the 50-yard free (:24.32).

Daniel captured sixth place in the 200-yard individual medley (2:17.65).

Yang garnered two points with a fourth-place finish in the 100-yard free (:52.60). Joseph finished just behind at :52.95, but was disqualified.

Stephen missed third place by .45 seconds when he finished fourth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:11.99).

On the women's side, Maggie Davenport and Claire Dorris, both former Lady Maroons, provided a strong effort, but Transylvania lost 138-88.

Davenport and Dorris combined to swim as part of the third-place 400-yard free relay team (4:02.03).

In the 400-yard medley relay, Davenport's team finished second (4:15.85) and Dorris' took fourth.

Individually, Davenport claimed third in the 200-yard back (2:21.67) and Dorris captured fifth in the 200-yard free (2:13.70).

Men's basketball


Albert Jackson contributed six points and two rebounds in the University of Georgia's 83-57 loss to the University of Florida on Jan. 28.

Jackson, an Earlington native who attended Hopkins County Central for three years, was 2-of-2 from the field.

On Saturday, the Bulldogs lost 75-70 to the University of Alabama. Jackson, a 6-11 center, collected seven points and six rebounds. Each of Jackson's six boards came on the defensive end; he also had a single block.

The defeat marked the team's eighth-straight loss. Georgia went 0-8 in January and has not won since defeating Kennesaw State University (Ga.) 72-52 on Dec. 31.

The Transylvania University Pioneers defeated Hanover College (Ind.) 74-69 in overtime on Jan. 29.

Brock Jones, a North graduate, scored 12 points in the winning effort. The former Maroon was one of three Pioneers to reach double-digits.

Jones, a senior, made four of his seven shots from the field and converted on each of his four free-throw attempts.

Transylvania outscored Hanover 14-9 in the overtime period for the victory and currently sits atop the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings.

Women's basketball

Former Central standout Kari Jo Harris and the Lee University Lady Flames (Tenn.) defeated Southern Wesleyan University (S.C.) 85-65 on Jan. 29.

Harris, a freshman, picked up two points and two assists in the win.

Two days later, Harris increased her offensive production to 11 points and added three steals as well when Lee beat Columbia College (S.C.) 92-66.

The Lady Flames (18-4, 8-2 Southern States Athletic Conference) have won four in a row.

Men's track

Barry Quinn, a former Maroon football and track athlete, finished 10th in the one-mile run (4:55.50) for Western Kentucky University at the Middle Tennessee Invitational on Saturday.

Quinn will look to improve upon his time when the Hilltoppers participate in the Rod McCravy Invitational at Lexington on Friday and Saturday.
