Step one at a possible fifth straight 2nd Region crown seemed too easy for the Henderson County girls basketball team on Monday night at Madisonville-North Hopkins High School.

The Lady Colonels (20-5) led by 15 at the end of the first quarter and never let the Hopkinsville Lady Tigers even sniff a comeback attempt in an 84-38 first-round 2nd Region victory.

Six Henderson players scored at least eight points in an extremely balanced effort. The Lady Colonels capitalized on offensive opportunities and used Hopkinsville's 17 first-half turnovers to create an even larger gap.

Henderson appeared to control every aspect of the game in the opening two quarters dominating the scoreboard, turnovers and even rebounds 31-16.

Lady Colonel center Alyse Poindexter utilized the paint with her 6-3 frame by manufacturing a game-high 21 points and disrupting the Lady Tigers' offensive scheme. Poindexter finished the game with 11 rebounds and five blocks.

Helping Poindexter and Henderson's offense was junior guard Ariel Barnes, who ended with 16 points. Barnes and Poindexter each posted double digits by halftime with 11 and 10 points respectively.

Barnes initially sparked the Lady Colonels streak that provided the team with a commanding lead. Hopkinsville held its only lead at 2-0 in the game's first minute, but then Henderson put together a 12-0 run. During the outburst, Barnes nailed back-to-back three-point shots. Another Barnes' three-pointer midway through the first put her squad up 15-4.

Henderson missed its first two shot attempts of the game, but sank seven of its next eight.

Lady Tiger freshman Christy Soldo hit her own three-point shot five minutes into the first quarter to make it a 10-point deficit, but Hopkinsville never came any closer. The Lady Tigers endured a 7:38 stretch in the first and second quarters during which no player converted a single field-goal attempt.

Henderson continued to build on its large advantage in the second quarter and took a 46-18 lead into halftime.

The second half did not prove any smoother for Hopkinsville as Henderson prevailed.

For the Lady Tigers, Marla Boyd ended her high school career with 13 points and eight rebounds in her final game.

Jessica Hobson and Sharae Wilson also finished up their senior campaigns.

Junior forward Tori Beth Nolen tied Boyd with a team-high 13 points and also posted a team-high 10 rebounds.

Henderson will now face Caldwell County (19-8) at 6 p.m. on Friday. Caldwell advanced after defeating Trigg County on Monday evening. The Lady Colonels defeated the Lady Tigers 72-40 on Jan. 2 during the two schools' only regular-season matchup.
