Western Kentucky University linebacker Blake Boyd collected eight tackles on Saturday against 20th-ranked Virginia Tech and also had the game’s longest offensive play, but it was not enough to overcome the powerful Hokies.
The Hilltoppers (2-4) hung tough at Lane Stadium, but Virginia Tech (5-1) prevailed 27-13 despite an impressive showing from Boyd, a former Maroon.
The Hokie offense jumped out to an early 10-0 lead while the team’s defense shutdown Western’s scoring chances.
At the beginning of the second quarter, the Hilltoppers lined up in punt formation on fourth down of their third possession. Jeremy Moore faked the kick and passed to a wide-open Boyd for a 46-yard reception to the Virginia Tech 19-yard line. The play was called back 10 yards, however, due to an illegal block.
Western later kicked a field goal to pull within 10-3 and then stopped the Hokies on their next two possessions, but eventually trailed 20-3 entering halftime.
Among Boyd’s tackles was a sack for a loss of four yards – one of the Hilltoppers’ season-high five on the day.
WKU will return home 6 p.m. Saturday to host the 25th-ranked Ball State Cardinals (6-0).
Former North football standout Tim Maypray led the Virginia Military Institute Keydets (2-3) in rushing yardage once again on Saturday in the team’s 56-16 loss to the sixth-ranked Richmond Spiders (Va.) of the Football Championship Subdivision.
Maypray ran 19 times for 88 yards, and his longest rush came on a 45-yard sprint during the second quarter. The run set up a 21-yard field goal, which cut Richmond’s advantage to 21-10.
VMI remained within reach at 28-10 at halftime, but scored just six points in the second half. Maypray was also 0-for-1 passing on the day.
The Keydets will open Big South Conference play 1:30 p.m. E.T. Saturday when the team plays host to Coastal Carolina at Foster Stadium.
Men’s cross country
Austin Peay State University runner Tim Hall continued his successful senior cross country campaign Saturday, finishing second for the Governors in the Auburn Invitational (Ala.) at Indian Pines Golf Course.
Hall, a North graduate, took 97th place overall with a time of 25:15.69 in the 8-K race, despite running with an injured hip. Teammate Ryne Sexton paced the team and finished 14 seconds ahead of Hall for 87th place.
Head coach Doug Molnar summed up his thoughts on the men’s race on apsugovernors.com
“Sexton had as good a day as I’ve seen from him,” Molnar said. “I’m really proud of (John) Newlin’s performance, and Hall ran with an injured hip. We had tough competition against nationally-ranked teams, but we held our own. We have next week off, then we get back into the swing of things at Evansville in two weeks.”
Hall and the Governors will race again 11:45 a.m. on Oct. 18 at the University of Evansville Invitational.
Men’s soccer
The Centre College Colonels soccer team defeated Birmingham Southern (Ala.) 3-2 on Friday to improve to 9-2 on the season, led by North product Aaron Arndt.
During the game Arndt, a goalkeeper, made one save and did not allow a single goal in the second half after his team trailed 2-1 going into halftime.
Two days later though the Colonels did not fair as well, losing 2-1 in overtime to the Millsaps College Majors (Miss.). Although the Colonels lost, Arndt amassed four saves.
Centre returns to action 8 p.m. at home against Rhodes College.
Women’s tennis
Former North tennis player Brittany Deese ended the fall season on a high note Friday for the Kentucky Wesleyan Lady Panthers tennis team.
Deese, a North graduate, and partner Amanda Nichols defeated Oakland City College’s Kristi McVey and Tabitha McKinney 8-3 in doubles competition to help the team sweep the Lady Oaks 9-0.
Wesleyan finished 4-2 during the fall and will now await the spring season.
Volleyball
Julia Ridley and the Barry University Buccaneer volleyball team (Fla.) swept its competition last week to improve to 7-4 overall on the year.
Ridley, who graduated from North, averaged 10 kills per game as Barry defeated three schools in three different matches.
On Wednesday, Barry beat the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish (Fla.) 3-0. Three days later, the Lady Buccaneers beat Valdosta State (Ga.) 3-1 then took down Flagler College (Fla.) 3-0. Ridley posted 11 kills in each of the wins and also added three blocks and one ace on the day.
Barry next plays 7 p.m. today against Lynn University (Fla.).
