Former Maroons runner Hall paces Austin Peay

Thursday, September 11, 2008

Former North runner Tim Hall paced the Austin Peay State University men’s cross country team for the second week in a row as he raced in the Belmont Invitational on Sept. 5.

Hall ran through flooded and muddy paths after a rain and lightning delay, but finished the 5K race with a time of 15:54.87.

“It was like a monsoon, they almost had to call the race off because of lightning,” Hall said. “They got us out there and we got the race in. It was pretty muddy, but races like that are just kind of fun to run.”

The time placed the senior in 12th overall and 12 seconds better than the next Govs’ runner, Ryne Sexton.

The race marked the second of the season for Hall, who is coming off a hip injury.

Hall said he experienced some inflammation from not stretching and overworking his hip, and although he is healthy now, the injury set him back.

“It’s kind of frustrating when you know you’re supposed to be at a different level than what you are right now,” he said. “I’ll get there, just got to keep working on it.

“It’s always good to see what you’ve done in the summer pay off, all the hard work and running by yourself,” Hall said. “It’s just great to get back into it.”

Despite Hall’s success, the men’s team placed sixth in the nine-team field. Hall and the Austin Peay runners will return to action at 9:20 p.m. Saturday in the Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic in Memphis, Tenn.

Football

The Western Kentucky University football team dropped Eastern Kentucky University 37-13 in the 85th Battle of the Bluegrass on Saturday and Madisonville-North Hopkins graduate Blake Boyd left his mark as part of a great defensive showing for the Hilltoppers.

Boyd finished the game with the second-highest number of tackles for Western for the second week in a row as the Hilltopper defense shutout the Colonels in the second half.

By game’s end, Boyd racked up seven tackles including a sack for a 3-yard loss and Western allowed just 79 yards of total offense in the final 30 minutes of play. The Hilltoppers allowed just 20 net yards rushing on 15 attempts.

Western (1-1) led just 16-13 at halftime, but scored once in the third quarter and twice in the fourth to move ahead 37-13 and claim the team’s first victory of the season.

The Hilltoppers will attempt to knock off the 11th-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide 6 p.m. Saturday.

Men’s soccer

Aaron Arndt, a 2006 North graduate, earned his second start of the season as goalkeeper for Centre College on Saturday against Illinois Wesleyan.

The former Maroon allowed one goal at the 30:24 mark when Jason Lopez found the back of the net, but shut down the opposition the rest of the way.

Centre scored in the 70th minute to regain the lead and eventually defeated Illinois Wesleyan 2-1 to improve to 3-1-0 on the season.

Another North grad, Aaron Taylor, saw some action on the soccer field on Sept. 4. for Kentucky Wesleyan.

Taylor entered the game for the Panthers as a substitute and was the only sub to record a shot in a 2-0 loss to Georgetown College. Taylor’s was one of 11 team shots.

The loss drops Kentucky Wesleyan’s season record to 0-2.

Women’s soccer

Former North soccer standout Laura Nance started in her second game of the year for Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday against Christian Brothers University at Panther Field.

Nance, a sophomore, scored three goals in the team’s season opener on Aug. 28, but did not attempt a shot against Christian Brothers as the Lady Panthers suffered a 5-1 loss, their first of the season.

Nance and the Lady Panthers will look to bounce back 2:30 p.m. Friday when Kentucky Wesleyan plays host to Quincy University (Ill.).
